Calendar

Regarding Fall 2020 and Spring 2021 semesters:

  • The BMC Fall 2020 semester will be held entirely online.
  • The BMC calendar for the Spring 2021 semester listed below assumes sessions will be held online. When UC Berkeley re-opens and students are permitted to return to campus, we will switch to in-person BMC sessions. Some groups -- e.g., Advanced -- may possibly still be held online. We will inform families of the mode of  Spring 2021 sessions in due time.

  • Regarding the Monthly Contest schedule, you'll find little symbols in the left hand column:
  1.      dist_icon.png   -  when a Monthly Contest will be distributed.
  2.     due_icon.png   -  when a Monthly Contest is due.
  3.      awards_icon.png  - when the awards for that Monthly Contest will be held.

Topic: Counting Connections and the Second-Meanest Math Question of the 20th Century

We start with an innocent and easy problem about cutting pizza, but then dive deeper and use this to create a truly mean-spirited multiple-choice question, one that stumped some very talented young people. We, however, will learn how to answer it correctly!

Bio: Paul Zeitz has been leading math circles in Berkeley and elsewhere for over 20 years. He was a member of the first USA team to participate in the IMO, and has helped to train several IMO teams. He taught at the University of San Francisco for almost 30 years, and is one of the founders of Proof School.

Approximate schedule:

  • 6:00pm: opening online event
  • 6:15-7:15pm: Seminar
  • 7:15-7:30pm: Q&A with speaker
  • 7:30-7:45pm: Monthly Contest winners, awards, and announcements for fall and spring semesters

The event is open to current BMC-Upper and MTRW students. Thus, only students and room-parents should log-in to the online event. Any other parents, siblings and family members who would like to join the event should watch the event through their BMC/MTRW student's account.
